Team members who show up, put safety first, and do things the right way get to take home a little extra every three months at Michael Hatcher & Associates through the Show Up For Safety incentive program.
“We have been doing this for about four years, and it represents a big part of what we want to be as a company,” says Jeff Peterman, who oversees commercial construction for Hatcher’s Huntsville and Memphis markets. “It’s about working safe, showing up consistently and on time, and looking out for each other. SUFS is all about our field team and celebrating their contribution to the company, so it’s exciting to get together as a group and reinforce our culture as a team.”
SUFS incentives are awarded on a quarterly basis through the Bonusly Employee Rewards Program, which Hatcher has utilized for the past two years. Scenarios in which employees receive points include birthdays and accolades for going above and beyond. Points can be redeemed in the Bonusly app for rewards such as digital gift cards to spend on groceries, food delivery, electronics, and travel. PayPal is a popular option.
“I convert my points to cash in PayPal and send the money to my bank account,” says Commercial Construction Operations Manager Cameron Poindexter of the Memphis Branch. “That’s the only way to go.”
For SUFS, points are awarded each quarter to Rising Stars, who can earn 1,500 points (equal to $150) for attendance and 1,000 points (equal to $100) for safety. The Champions Club honors all perfect crew members and technicians with two consecutive perfect quarters, which garners them an extra 2,500 points, the equivalent of $250. At the end of the fourth quarter, every field employee who was perfect all year long gets an additional 10,000 points, equivalent to $1,000, as a Most Valuable Player.
The program is based on the company’s Core Values: Integrity, Teamwork, and Excellence. It is open to seasonal, FTE, and temporary field crew members and technicians throughout the South Region of Hatcher Landscape Partners, the commercial landscape platform of which MHA and Master Lawn are a part. The awards serve as a reminder that everyone goes home safe every day, no exceptions.
“Safety is not a slogan. It’s the standard for how we work,” says HLP Chief Financial Officer Chris Hoshell, who notes that safety remains at the forefront even as HLP grows.
“When we rush, skip steps, or don’t speak up, performance drops and risk goes up. When we do the basics well, we win, and we stay safe doing it.”
